James Alexander (born December 17, 1948) is an American soul and R&B musician. He is well-known as a longtime member of the band the Bar-Kays, where he plays the bass guitar.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

James Alexander was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up very close to Stax Records, a famous music studio in Memphis. He even said that the clinic where he was born was right across the street from Stax! Alexander went to Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis.

Family and Inspiration

James Alexander is the father of hip-hop and R&B producer Phalon "Jazze Pha" Alexander. He named his son after his good friend and Bar-Kays bandmate, Phalon Jones, who passed away. James Alexander's son's mother is a singer named Denise Williams.

Music Career Highlights

James Alexander was the bassist for the Bar-Kays, a popular band. A very sad event happened when four of the six band members were killed in a plane crash. This was the same plane crash that also took the life of soul singer Otis Redding.

The Bar-Kays and a Tragic Event

James Alexander was the only Bar-Kays member who was not on that flight. Before the plane left, he decided to return the band's rental car. He planned to take a different flight to meet the band at their next show. After the accident, Alexander had the difficult task of helping identify his bandmates and Otis Redding.

Rebuilding and Success

After the crash, Ben Cauley, who was the only survivor from the plane, worked with James Alexander to bring the band back together. They continued to make music. One of their big achievements was playing on the soundtrack for the 1971 movie Shaft. Alexander played bass guitar on the famous theme song, which won an Academy Award.

Still Making Music Today

As of 2018, James Alexander was the only original member still performing with the Bar-Kays. The band continues to be active and perform for fans.
