James Alexander Stewart-Mackenzie (born September 23, 1784 – died September 24, 1843) was an important Scottish politician. He also worked as a British colonial administrator, which means he helped manage parts of the British Empire.
Early Life and Family
James Alexander Stewart was born on September 23, 1784. His parents were Georgina Isabella d'Aguilar and Vice Admiral The Hon. Keith Stewart. Sadly, his father passed away when James was only eleven years old.
After his father's death, his mother remarried in 1797 to Lt.-Col. Richard Fitzgerald. He was a soldier who later died in battle at Battle of Waterloo.
Political Career
Stewart-Mackenzie became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons. This is like being a representative in the government.
He was first elected for the area of Ross-shire in 1831. When that area's constituency (the group of voters he represented) was changed in 1832, he was elected for the new area called Ross and Cromarty. He served as an MP there until 1837.
After his time in Parliament, James Stewart-Mackenzie took on new roles. From March 1837 to 1840, he served as the British Governor of Ceylon. Ceylon is now known as Sri Lanka. Later, from December 1840 to 1843, he became the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. These islands are located in Corfu, Greece.
Personal Life and Family
On May 21, 1817, James married Mary Elizabeth Frederica Mackenzie. She was known as "the Hooded Lassie." Mary was the daughter of Francis Mackenzie, 1st Baron Seaforth. After their marriage, James added "Mackenzie" to his last name, becoming Stewart-Mackenzie.
Together, James and Mary had five children:
- Keith William Stewart-MacKenzie (1818–1881)
- Mary Frances Stewart-Mackenzie (1819–1913)
- Caroline Susan Stewart-Mackenzie (1822–1867)
- George Augustus Frederick Wellington Stewart-Mackenzie (1824–1852)
- Louisa Caroline Stewart-Mackenzie (1827–1903)
James Stewart-Mackenzie passed away on September 24, 1843. His wife, Mary, died later on November 28, 1862.
Notable Descendants
Through his eldest son, Keith, James was the grandfather of James Alexander Francis Humberston Mackenzie. He was given the title of Baron Seaforth in 1921. Another notable descendant was Mary Jeune, Baroness St Helier, who was a well-known society hostess and politician.
His daughter Louisa was the grandmother of Hon. Mary Florence Baring. She married William Compton, 5th Marquess of Northampton, and became the Marchioness of Northampton.
