Early Life and Military Service
Before the war, James Washington worked as a farmer and a clerk. When the Civil War began in April 1861, he joined the Confederate Army. He started as a sergeant in a group called the Goldsboro Rifles. This group later became Company A of the 27th North Carolina Regiment.
He quickly moved up in rank. By May 16, 1861, he became a captain in Company H of the 2nd North Carolina Regiment. Then, on April 15, 1862, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the 50th North Carolina Regiment.
Leading Troops in the Civil War
As a lieutenant colonel, James Washington took on more leadership roles. He commanded the 50th North Carolina Regiment during important military actions.
Key Campaigns and Commands
In 1863, Colonel Washington led his regiment during a campaign by Major General D. H. Hill. This campaign involved fighting around New Bern and Washington, North Carolina. He also commanded the 50th Regiment during an event known as Potter's raid in 1863. During this raid, there was some action near Tarboro. After this, Colonel Washington decided to step down from his military role.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, James Washington returned to his earlier life. He continued to work as a farmer and a clerk.
