He started working on these gardens around 1840 after moving from Knypersley Hall. His wife Maria and his friend Edward William Cooke, who was a painter, helped him. About James Bateman

James Bateman was born in Redvales, near Bury in Lancashire. He went to Lincoln College, Oxford in 1829 and later to Magdalen College, Oxford. He earned his first degree in 1834 and a master's degree in 1845. For about 20 years, he made a lot of money in businesses like iron, engineering, and banking.
In 1861, Bateman and his sons left their home and gardens at Biddulph. One of his sons was the famous painter Robert Bateman. James Bateman then moved to Kensington in London. He later moved to Worthing in Sussex, where he passed away on November 27, 1897.
A Passion for Plants
James Bateman loved collecting and growing tropical plants. He was especially interested in orchids. He was also a member of important groups like the Linnean Society and the Royal Society. He wrote many books about orchids and other plants. He also loved rhododendrons and azaleas.
Bateman was known as a great expert on orchids. He helped develop new ways to grow them. He even paid for trips to Mexico and South America. These trips allowed plant collectors to find rare orchid types. He published three beautiful books filled with pictures of orchids.
He was also a pioneer in "cool orchid cultivation." This meant he found a way to grow orchids like the Odontoglossum in England. He did this by making the conditions similar to the cool, dry cloud forests where these flowers naturally grow. A talented artist named Walter Hood Fitch drew the pictures for Bateman's amazing orchid books. One of his books, A Monograph of Odontoglossum, is very rare and has 30 large, hand-colored drawings. The famous naturalist Charles Darwin even received orchids and a letter from Bateman in 1862.
Designing Gardens
James Bateman created the well-known gardens at Biddulph Grange. His wife Maria, who was a botanist, and his friend Edward William Cooke helped him. The gardens at Biddulph are special because they show a time between two different styles of garden design. They are divided into many smaller areas, each with its own theme.
Bateman also helped design the Arboretum at Derby. This was the first public park in England.
A children's book called Mr Bateman's Garden (1987) by Priscilla Masters is a fantasy story set in these gardens.
His Family
On April 24, 1838, James Bateman married Maria Sybilla. She was the third daughter of Rowland Egerton Warburton. They had three sons: John, Rowland, and Robert, who became a famous painter. They also had a daughter named Katherine.
