James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Butler, the 2nd Earl of Ormond (born October 4, 1331 – died October 18, 1382), was an important noble in Ireland. He was a powerful leader in Irish politics during the 1360s and 1370s. He served as the Lord Justice of Ireland multiple times: in 1359, 1364, and 1376.

James was born at Kilkenny Castle. His parents were James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormond and Lady Eleanor de Bohun. He was known as The Noble Earl because his mother was a great-granddaughter of King Edward I of England. He passed away at Knocktopher Castle in Kilkenny, Ireland.

James Butler's Career

In 1362, James Butler led a battle against followers of Mac Murrough near Teigstaffen in County Kilkenny.

Becoming Lord Deputy

On April 22, 1364, James was chosen to be the Lord Deputy of Ireland. He served under Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, who was the King's representative in Ireland. Duke Lionel trusted James Butler a lot. For several years, James had a great deal of power as the Lord Deputy.

Political Challenges

During the 1360s, James Butler had disagreements with Maurice FitzGerald, 4th Earl of Kildare. In 1364, the Irish Parliament sent a group to England. This group, led by Kildare, complained about how Ireland was being governed. They asked for some "corrupt" officials to be removed. Some of these officials were connected to Ormond. While some officials were removed, James Butler's strong position was not seriously harmed.

Later Years in Office

By July 24, 1376, he was again serving as the Lord Justice of Ireland. He received a salary of £500 a year for this role. King Richard II of England kept him in this important position. On April 2, 1372, he also became the constable of Dublin Castle. This meant he was in charge of the castle. He was also asked to attend the Parliaments held by King Richard II.

James Butler died on October 18, 1382, at his castle in Knocktopher. He had founded a Friary for Carmelite friars near there in 1356. He was buried in St. Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny.

On May 15, 1346, James Butler married Elizabeth Darcy. She was the daughter of Sir John Darcy, who was also a Lord Justice of Ireland.
