James Butler (Irish Brigade officer) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Colonel James Butler was an important Irish soldier who served in the French army. He was part of a famous family called the Butler dynasty. James was the son of Richard Butler of Galmoye and the grandson of Edward Butler, 2nd Viscount Galmoye.

He was expected to inherit a special family title called "Viscount Galmoye." However, things got complicated. The Irish Parliament had decided in 1697 that the titles of the previous Viscount were no longer valid. This meant that even though James was the rightful family heir, his claim to the title was not officially recognized.

Colonel Butler was a high-ranking officer in the Irish Brigade. This was a group of Irish soldiers who fought for France, often because they could not serve in the army back home in Ireland.

Family and Succession

Colonel James Butler passed away in 1770. He did not have any sons to inherit his family's position. After his death, the family titles (even though they weren't officially recognized) were taken on by the son of his youngest brother, Captain Francis Piers Butler.

Captain Francis Piers Butler was also a soldier in the Irish Brigade. His son, Piers-Louis-Antoine, later took on the titles. However, Piers-Louis-Antoine also died without any children in 1826, which meant this line of the family ended.
