He went to college at the City College of New York. Later, he studied law at Cornell Law School. He earned his law degree, called an LL.B., in 1912. This degree allowed him to become a lawyer.
Career in Law and Politics
After finishing law school, James C. Thomas began his career. He first joined the Republican Party in politics. In 1917, he tried to become a member of the Board of Aldermen in New York City, which was like a city council, but he did not win.
In 1921, he married Laura M. Harmon. They had two sons together. From 1921 to 1927, he worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. This meant he helped the government with legal cases in New York.
After this, he started his own law practice in New York City. He became a specialist in immigration law. This type of law helps people who want to move to a new country.
Serving in the State Assembly
Later in his career, James C. Thomas became a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1953. The State Assembly is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state of New York.
