James Carey was a brave sailor who served in the United States Navy. He is remembered for his amazing courage. He received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award a person can get for military bravery in the United States.

A Life of Courage

James Carey was born in Ireland. The exact year is a bit unclear, but it was either 1844 or 1847. Later, he moved to the United States. In 1866, he joined the U.S. Navy from New York City.

Heroic Actions

In 1868, James Carey was serving on a ship called the USS Huron. During his time on this ship, he showed incredible bravery. He saved three of his fellow sailors from drowning. Because of his heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Carey continued his service in the Navy. He later served on another ship, the USS Kansas. While on this ship, he once again saved another sailor from drowning. His actions showed that he was a true hero, always ready to help others in danger.
