Early Life and Challenges
James Carter was born in Baltimore, Maryland. From a young age, he loved competing in track and field events. When he was 12, James faced a big challenge. He was diagnosed with a rare condition called Myasthenia Gravis. This condition made it hard for him to run, walk, and even chew food.
Luckily, after surgery to remove a small growth from his chest, James was able to get back to his favorite sport. In high school, at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, he became a star. He won many state championships in different events like sprints, hurdles, jumps, and relays. He was even named Gatorade Athlete of the Year for Maryland during his junior and senior years.
After high school, James went to Hampton University. There, he continued to excel in the 400-meter hurdles. He became a two-time national All-American, finishing seventh in 1998 and third in 1999 at the NCAA national championships. He also holds school records in the Triple Jump and for scoring the most points in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meets.
