James Caulfeild, 3rd Viscount Charlemont (born July 29, 1682 – died April 21, 1734) was an important figure in Ireland's history. He was an Anglo-Irish politician and a noble, known as a "peer." Being Anglo-Irish meant his family had roots in both England and Ireland.

Early Life and Education

James Caulfeild was the son of William Caulfeild, 2nd Viscount Charlemont and Anne Margetson. He grew up in a family with a long history in Ireland. James received a good education at Trinity College Dublin, which is a famous university. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1702. Two years later, in 1704, he completed his Master of Arts degree.

A Career in Politics

James Caulfeild became involved in politics at a young age. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent people in the government. He represented the area of Charlemont in the Irish House of Commons. This was like the main assembly where laws were discussed and made.

He served as a Member of Parliament for two periods. His first time was from 1703 to 1705. Later, he returned to serve again from 1713 to 1726.

Becoming a Peer

On July 21, 1726, something very important happened in James Caulfeild's life. He inherited the title of "Viscount Charlemont" from his father. A viscount is a noble title, ranking below an earl but above a baron. This meant he became a "peer."

As a peer, he gained a seat in the Irish House of Lords. This was another part of the Irish Parliament, usually made up of nobles and bishops. It was a very important position that allowed him to help shape the laws and future of Ireland.

Family Life

James Caulfeild married Elizabeth Bernard. Her parents were Francis Bernard and Alice Ludlow. James and Elizabeth had three children together. Their oldest son, also named James Caulfeild, became even more famous than his father. In 1763, he was given the higher noble title of Earl of Charlemont.
