James Rashad Coleman is an American politician who helps make laws in Colorado. He is currently a member of the Colorado Senate, representing the 33rd district. Since January 8, 2025, he has been the President of the Colorado Senate, which is a very important leadership role. Before joining the Senate, he was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives.

Early Life and Education
James Coleman grew up in Park Hill, Denver. He went to Oral Roberts University. There, he studied psychology and business. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Political Career
Starting in the House of Representatives
James Coleman was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2016. He won the Democratic primary election with 41.37% of the votes. He then ran without any opponents in the main election.
While in the House, Coleman worked on important committees. These included the Business Affairs & Labor Committee. He also served on the House Local Government Committee.
Moving to the Colorado Senate
In 2019, Coleman decided to run for a seat in the Colorado Senate. He aimed to represent the 33rd district. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
In the November general election, he won against Jerry Burton. Coleman officially started his role in the Senate on January 13, 2021.
Becoming Senate President
James Coleman was chosen to be the President of the Colorado Senate. This happened for the 75th General Assembly. He is the second African-American person to hold this important position. As President, he leads the Senate's meetings and helps guide its work.
Personal Life
James Coleman lives in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood in Denver. He is married to Shayna. They have two children together.
