History of James Coney Island
Starting the Business in Houston
James Coney Island was started in 1923. Two brothers, James and Tom Papadakis, opened the first restaurant. They were Greek immigrants. The company is named after James Papadakis.
Their first restaurant was one of the first places in Houston to sell many hot dogs. For a long time, the business was run by the Papadakis family. This is called a family-owned business.
Changes in Ownership
In 1990, the family's other businesses had problems. Because of this, the restaurants were sold. A group of people bought James Coney Island. These new owners included Ghulam Bombaywala and Irvin Kaplan.
Key Locations and Closures
The very first James Coney Island restaurant opened in Downtown Houston in 1923. This location was very important to the company. It was known as the chain's number one spot.
