James Coney Island, Inc. is a popular chain of fast food restaurants. It is famous for its delicious Hot dogs, especially the "Coney Island hot dog." The company's main office is located in Houston, Texas.
A Taste of History
James Coney Island was started in 1923. It was founded by two brothers, James and Tom Papadakis. They were immigrants from Greece. James Papadakis is the person the company is named after. Their first restaurant was one of the very first places to sell hot dogs in Houston.
Changing Hands
For many years, the business was owned and run by the Papadakis family. This changed in 1990. New owners took over the restaurants. These new owners included Ghulam Bombaywala and Irvin Kaplan.
Store Locations Over Time
The very first James Coney Island restaurant opened in Downtown Houston in 1923. This location was at 1011 Walker Street. Before that, it was in a smaller spot on Rusk Street.
In 2010, the company announced that the 815 Dallas Street location was closing. This happened after a disagreement with the building's owner. The 1011 Walker location closed in 1993. This was because the city decided to build a tall building there.
The chain's second location opened in the Town & Country Mall area in 1968. This store closed permanently in 2020. As of February 2021, James Coney Island had 17 locations.
More recently, some locations have closed. In August 2021, the store at 4320 W Sam Houston Parkway and Clay closed. It had been open since 2008. In March 2022, the Meadows Place location closed after more than 25 years. The long-standing South Shepherd location also closed in July 2022.
