James Crichton, Viscount Frendraught (died around 1664 or 1665) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held a special title called a "Viscount" in Scotland.
Early Life and Family
James Crichton was the oldest son of James Crichton of Frendraught. His mother was Elizabeth, who was the eldest daughter of John Gordon, the 13th earl of Sutherland. James Crichton was also a descendant of William Crichton, 1st Lord Crichton, who was a powerful figure in Scottish history.
His father, James Crichton of Frendraught, had many disagreements with other families. One of the main groups they had conflicts with was the Gordons of Rothiemay. These conflicts sometimes led to their home, Frendraught Castle, being attacked.
Becoming a Viscount
James Crichton received important titles during his life. In 1641, he was made a baron, which is a noble title. The next year, in 1642, he was given the higher title of Viscount Frendraught. This showed his importance in Scottish society.
Supporting Montrose
James Crichton was involved in some major events in Scottish history. He joined Montrose on his final military journey. Montrose was a famous Scottish general.
James Crichton was present at the Battle of Carbisdale in 1650. During this battle, Montrose's horse was injured. James Crichton bravely gave Montrose his own horse. This helped Montrose escape from the battle for a while.
Later Life and Successor
Viscount Frendraught passed away sometime between July 1664 and August 1665. After his death, his son, also named James, became the 2nd Viscount Frendraught.
The 2nd Viscount James Crichton was a Jacobite. This means he supported the claim of James VII and II to the throne of Scotland and England. During a time of rebellion known as the first Jacobite rising (1689–1691), he signed an agreement in Tomintoul. This agreement, signed on January 15, 1690, showed his support for King James. The 2nd Viscount Frendraught died before August 1699.
