James Frederick Dudley Crichton-Stuart (born 17 February 1824, died 24 October 1891) was an important British figure. He was a soldier who reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and also a Liberal politician. He served his country in both the military and in government.

Early Life and Family
James Crichton-Stuart was born into a well-known family. His father was Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart, who was also a politician. James was even a great-great-grandson of a former Prime Minister, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. His mother was Hannah, whose father, William Tighe, was also a Member of Parliament.
Military Service
James Crichton-Stuart chose a career in the military. He joined a famous British Army regiment called the Grenadier Guards. During his time serving, he worked his way up through the ranks. He eventually achieved the important position of lieutenant-colonel. This means he was a senior officer in the army.
Political Career
After his military service, James Crichton-Stuart entered the world of politics.
Member of Parliament
In 1859, he was elected to the House of Commons. This is the main part of the British Parliament where laws are made. He represented the area of Cardiff. Interestingly, his father had also held this same seat in Parliament before him. James Crichton-Stuart continued to represent Cardiff for many years, serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) until 1880.
Lord-Lieutenant of Buteshire
Besides being an MP, James Crichton-Stuart also held another important public role. From 1859 until his death in 1891, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of Buteshire. A Lord-Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county or area. It is a largely ceremonial role, but it shows his importance in the region.
Later Life
In 1864, James Crichton-Stuart married Gertrude Frances. She was the daughter of Sir George Hamilton Seymour. They had several children together. James Crichton-Stuart passed away in October 1891, when he was 67 years old. His wife, Gertrude, lived for another eighteen years after him, dying in December 1909.
