Lord Patrick James Herbert Crichton-Stuart (born 25 August 1794 – died 7 September 1859) was an important British politician. He was known as the Honourable Patrick Stuart until 1817. A politician is someone who works in government, helping to make decisions and laws for the country.

Early Life and Family Connections
Patrick Stuart was born into a very important family. His grandfather was John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute. His great-grandfather was John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, who was even a Prime Minister of Great Britain!
Sadly, Patrick's father died in a riding accident before he was born. His mother passed away when he was only three years old. He had an older brother named John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute.
A New Name and Title
In 1817, Patrick Stuart received a special honour. He was given the rank of a younger son of a Marquess. A Marquess is a very high rank in the British nobility, just below a Duke. At this time, he also changed his last name to Crichton, by special permission from the King. This is why he became known as Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart.
His Time in Politics
Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiff. An MP is someone elected by the people to represent them in the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament.
He first served as an MP from 1818 to 1820. He then returned to Parliament and served again from 1826 to 1832.
Serving His Local Area
Besides being an MP, Lord Patrick also held another important role. From 1847 to 1859, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of Buteshire. A Lord-Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county. It's a bit like being a special ambassador for the monarch in that area.
Family and Later Life
In 1818, Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart married Hannah Tighe. Her father, William Tighe, was also a Member of Parliament.
Lord Patrick and Hannah had a son named James. Following in his father's footsteps, James also became an MP for Cardiff.
Lord Patrick Crichton-Stuart passed away in September 1859, when he was 65 years old. His wife, Hannah, lived for another thirteen years and died in 1872.
