James Cruze (born Jens Cruz Bosen; March 27, 1884 – August 3, 1942) was a famous actor and director during the silent film era. He was known for making many movies, especially exciting adventure films and dramas.
Career in Film
James Cruze was involved in over 100 movies! He worked as an actor, a director, and sometimes even a producer. Most of his work was done when movies didn't have sound.
He started acting in 1910 at a company called Lubin Manufacturing. In 1911, he joined Thanhouser Company. This is where he made many of his early films. He often played the main character.
After 1916, Cruze began focusing more on directing and producing. He worked for several companies, but mostly for Paramount Pictures. He continued making movies until 1938.
One of his most famous movies as a director was The Covered Wagon (1923). It was a huge hit! This film helped make Western movies very popular. He also directed The Pony Express (1925), another big adventure film.
Personal Life
James Cruze was married four times. His first marriage was around 1901, and he had five children with his first wife. Later, he married actress Marguerite Snow and they had a daughter named Julie Jane. They divorced in 1923.
He then married actress Betty Compson in 1924. His last marriage was to Alberta Beatrice McCoy in 1941. They were still married when he passed away.
Death
James Cruze died on August 3, 1942. He was 58 years old. He passed away at his home in Hollywood, California. His remains were buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
