James Douglas, 3rd Lord Mordington, was an important Scottish nobleman born in 1651. He took over his title and lands from his father, William Douglas, 2nd Lord Mordington.

Early Life and Estates

James Douglas became the "Master of Mordington" and inherited important lands. Records from 1662 show he gained control of the Nether Mordington estates. He also acquired Edrington and its castle. These lands were located in the lower part of the Mordington area.

Influence and Landholdings

James Douglas, Lord Mordington, was a powerful figure in his time. A famous Scottish judge, Sir John Lauder, Lord Fountainhall, wrote about him in his journals. In 1670, Sir John mentioned that Lord Mordington was the main landowner (or "superior") of the nearby town of Chirnside. He was also in charge of the local church, known as the Kirk.

Lord Mordington owned many properties. These included Over Mordington and Nether Mordington (which is now called Edrington House). He also had a large park. He even owned land near the River Tweed called Magdalene field. However, he faced challenges keeping control of Magdalene field from people in Berwick. Because of this, he decided to sell it.

Family Life

James Douglas, 3rd Lord Mordington, married a woman named Anne. She was born in 1651. Anne was the daughter of Alexander Seton, 1st Viscount of Kingston. Her mother was Jean, who passed away in 1651. James and Anne had a son who would later become George Douglas, 4th Lord Mordington.
