Becoming an Earl

James Erskine married Mary Douglas, 6th Countess of Buchan. She was the daughter and only heir of James Douglas, 5th Earl of Buchan. Because of this marriage, James Erskine took on the title of Earl of Buchan.

This important title was officially confirmed by a special document from the king. This document, called a royal charter, was dated March 22, 1617. His wife, Mary, gave up her rights to the title so that he could hold it. This meant he was allowed to have all the honors and special rank that previous Earls of Buchan had.

His Role in Government

James Erskine and his wife had their high rank confirmed by a court decision on July 25, 1628. This decision made sure they had a higher rank than several other earls.

When King Charles I became king, James Erskine was chosen for a special role. He became one of the Lords of the Bedchamber. This was a trusted position close to the king.

Family and Later Life

James Erskine spent most of his time living in London. He passed away in 1640. He was buried in a place called Auchterhouse in Forfarshire, Scotland. His wife, Mary, died before him in 1628.

They had six children together. They had two sons, James, who later became the 7th Earl, and John. They also had four daughters.
