The title Duke of Lennox is a very old and important title in Scotland. It's like being a special leader or noble. The name comes from a place called Lennox in Dumbarton. This title has been created a few times for different families, especially for a group called Clan Stewart of Darnley.
The first time the Dukedom of Lennox was created was in 1581. Before that, it was a slightly lower title called the Earldom of Lennox. Over time, some Dukes of Lennox also became Dukes of Richmond. Today, the person holding the title of Duke of Lennox also holds the titles of Duke of Richmond and Duke of Gordon. This means the current Duke holds three important dukedom titles!
First Dukes of Lennox (1581)
The first time the title of Duke of Lennox was created was by James VI of Scotland in 1581. He gave it to his cousin and close friend, Esmé Stewart. This title was passed down through the Stewart family.

The first creation of the Dukedom of Lennox ended in 1672 when the 6th Duke, Charles Stewart, passed away without any children to inherit his titles.
Later Dukes of Lennox (1675)
The title of Duke of Lennox was created again in 1675. This time, it was given by King Charles II to his son, Charles Lennox. This new creation also included the title of Duke of Richmond. Later, in 1876, the Duke of Richmond and Lennox was also made the Duke of Gordon.

The current Duke of Lennox is Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke. His eldest son, Charles Gordon-Lennox (born in 1994), is expected to inherit the titles next.
