Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox (born Lennox) was an important British politician. He lived from 1818 to 1903. He held many important jobs in the government, like being a leader in the House of Lords. He was also known as the 6th Duke of Richmond, the 6th Duke of Lennox, and later the 1st Duke of Gordon.

Early Life and Education

Charles Henry Lennox was born in London in 1818. His father was the 5th Duke of Richmond and Lennox. His mother was Lady Caroline.

He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford University. While at Oxford, he played cricket for a short time. He also served in the Royal Horse Guards, which is a part of the British Army. He was an aide-de-camp (a personal assistant) to the famous Duke of Wellington.

In 1836, his family's last name changed. His father inherited some land from an uncle. Because of this, his father and all his children started using the name Gordon-Lennox.

A Career in Politics

Charles Gordon-Lennox began his political journey in 1841. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for West Sussex. An MP is a person elected to represent a certain area in the government.

In 1859, he became a member of the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the British monarch.

In 1860, he became the Duke of Richmond after his father passed away. This meant he joined the House of Lords. The House of Lords is one of the two parts of the British Parliament.

He led two important groups called Royal Commissions:

  • In 1866, he led a group looking into capital punishment (the death penalty).
  • In 1869, he led a group studying the water supply. This group decided that there needed to be a better plan for providing water to homes.

In 1867, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter. This is a very old and important award in Britain.

He worked in several governments led by the Conservative Party. These governments were led by prime ministers like the Earl of Derby, Benjamin Disraeli, and the Marquess of Salisbury.

In 1876, he received more honors for his public service. He was given the new titles of Duke of Gordon and Earl of Kinrara.

He also served as the Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen from 1861 until he died in 1903. The Chancellor is usually the head of a university.
