The title Duke of Gordon has been created twice. First, it was created in the Peerage of Scotland. Later, it was created again in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

This important title is named after the Clan Gordon, a famous Scottish family.

First Dukes of Gordon (1684-1836)

The first time the Dukedom was created was in 1684. George Gordon, who was already the 4th Marquess of Huntly, became the first Duke. King Charles II gave him this title.

Along with the Dukedom, he received several other titles. These included Marquess of Huntly and Viscount of Inverness. The main home for the Dukes of Gordon was Gordon Castle in Scotland.

Later, in 1784, the 4th Duke, Alexander Gordon, received more titles. These were Earl of Norwich and Baron Gordon. These new titles were part of the Peerage of Great Britain.

However, the first Dukedom of Gordon ended in 1836. This happened because the 5th Duke, George Duncan Gordon, passed away without any children. All the titles created in 1684 and 1784 also ended at this time.

Second Dukes of Gordon (1876-Present)

After the first Dukedom ended, most of the Gordon family's lands went to a different branch of the family. These lands went to the son of the 5th Duke's older sister. This was the 5th Duke of Richmond. His main family home was Goodwood House in Sussex, England.

In 1876, his son, the 6th Duke of Richmond and Lennox, received a new Dukedom of Gordon. This new title was created by Queen Victoria. It was named "Duke of Gordon, of Gordon Castle in Scotland". He also became the Earl of Kinrara.

This means the current Duke holds four Dukedoms, which is more than almost anyone else in the United Kingdom. These include the Dukedom of Richmond and the Dukedom of Lennox. The French title Duke of Aubigny is also part of this family's history.
