Viscount Aboyne facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The title of Viscount Aboyne was a special honor given to certain noblemen in Scotland. It was part of the Peerage of Scotland, which is a list of all the noble titles in Scotland.

This title was first created on April 20, 1632. It was given to George Gordon, who was also known as the Earl of Enzie. He was the oldest son of George Gordon, 1st Marquess of Huntly, a very important nobleman.

What made this title interesting was a special rule called a "remainder." This rule said that the title would not automatically go to George Gordon's oldest son. Instead, it was planned to go to his second son, James Gordon. This would happen either when George Gordon died or when his father, the 1st Marquess of Huntly, died, whichever came first.

In 1636, George Gordon became the 2nd Marquess of Huntly. Because of the special rule, the Viscount Aboyne title then passed to his second son, James Gordon, who became the second Viscount Aboyne. James Gordon never married, and when he passed away in 1649, the title ended. It was never used again after that.
