Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Domhnall of Lennox was an important Scottish leader. He was known as a Mormaer, which was like a powerful local ruler or earl. Domhnall ruled the area of Lennox from 1333 to 1365. He took over after his father, Maol Choluim II.

Who Was Domhnall of Lennox?

Domhnall of Lennox was a significant figure in 14th-century Scotland. He inherited his title, Mormaer of Lennox, from his father, Maol Choluim II. The Lennox region is in central Scotland. Domhnall's rule lasted for over 30 years.

Domhnall's Role in Scottish History

Domhnall was a loyal supporter of King David II of Scotland. This was during a time called the Second War of Scottish Independence. This war was a long struggle for Scotland's freedom from England. King David II often visited Dumbarton, a town in Domhnall's territory. The King stayed there at least twelve times between 1341 and 1346.

The Battle of Neville's Cross

In 1346, a major battle took place called the Battle of Neville's Cross. King David II and many Scottish nobles fought against the English. Sadly, King David and many others, including Malcolm Fleming, were captured by the English.

Helping King David II

After the King was captured, Domhnall played a key role in getting him back. In 1357, Domhnall attended a special meeting in Edinburgh. At this meeting, leaders chose people to negotiate for the King's release. They had to arrange a ransom, which was a payment to free the King.

In 1361, King David II gave Domhnall an important document. This document, called a charter, confirmed a large grant of forest land. This land had originally been given by an earlier king, Alexander III of Scotland.

Domhnall's Family and Legacy

Domhnall had one child, a daughter named Margaret, Countess of Lennox. She later became the Countess of Lennox. Margaret married a relative named Baltar mac Amlaimh. He was also known as Walter of Faslane. This marriage helped keep the Earldom of Lennox in the same family line.

Passing on the Earldom

Domhnall died sometime between May 1361 and November 1364. After his death, Walter of Faslane, his son-in-law, became the new Earl of Lennox. This meant the important title stayed within the family.
