James Forbes (born around 1629, died 1712) was a Scottish religious leader. He was known as a nonconformist divine, which meant he was a Christian minister who didn't follow the official rules of the Church of England at that time.

James Forbes's Life Story

Early Life and Ministry

James Forbes was born around 1629. He studied at Aberdeen University in Scotland. Later, he also received a master's degree from Oxford University in England.

In 1654, Forbes began working at Gloucester Cathedral. He was a very popular preacher there. People loved his sermons.

Challenges and Imprisonment

After the Restoration in 1660, things changed. The king returned to power, and the official Church of England became very strict. Because James Forbes did not follow the official church rules, he was quickly removed from his job at the cathedral.

However, he chose to stay in Gloucester. He continued to lead religious services in private. Even the dean of Gloucester, Robert Frampton, who later became a bishop, tried to convince Forbes to join the official church. But Forbes refused.

Forbes faced many difficulties for his beliefs. He was arrested and sent to Chepstow Castle for a long time. This happened because of a political event known as the "Yarranton Plot."

After he was released, he went back to his religious work. He was often put in prison in Gloucester. One time, he was held for a whole year. He also faced serious legal charges. These laws tried to stop people from practicing religion outside the official church. The penalties could be a large fine, or even being forced to leave the country or face death. Forbes was also cut off from the official church.

Later Years and Legacy

During a time of unrest called Monmouth's Rebellion, Forbes moved away for safety. He went to Enfield, Middlesex. But he soon returned to Gloucester. He continued his ministry there until he died.

James Forbes served the people of Gloucester for nearly 58 years. He passed away on May 31, 1712, at the age of 83. He was buried under the communion table in his church. A minister named John Noble gave the speech at his funeral.

Edmund Calamy, a famous historian, said that Forbes was a perfect example of a nonconformist minister. When Forbes died, he left money and his library to help others.

James Forbes's Writings

James Forbes also wrote several books and sermons. These works shared his religious ideas and advice.

Here are some of his important writings:

  • Nehustan (1694): This book argued against the ideas of a Quaker named John Elliot.
  • A Summary of that Knowledge and Practice that leads to Heaven (1700): This book offered guidance on how to live a good life.
  • God's Goodness to His Israel in All Ages (1700): This book was based on some of his sermons. It talked about God's kindness to people throughout history.
  • Pastoral Instruction (1713): This book was published after his death. It included a farewell letter to his followers. It also contained his last sermon and some short advice for young people. His funeral sermon was also added to this collection.
