James Gamble (born April 3, 1803 – died April 29, 1891) was an Irish-American businessman. He was a soap maker who helped start the famous company Procter & Gamble in 1837. He founded the company with his brother-in-law, William Procter.

Early Life of James Gamble

James Gamble was born in a place called Graan, near Enniskillen in Ireland. He went to school at Portora Royal School.

In 1819, James and his family moved to America. They traveled on a flat boat down the Ohio River. They planned to go to Illinois, but James became very sick in Cincinnati, Ohio. So, his family decided to stay there. His father started a plant nursery. James began learning how to make soap as an apprentice. He later went to Kenyon College and graduated in 1824. By 1828, he was making soap on his own.

Starting Procter & Gamble

James Gamble and William Procter became business partners because their families were connected. James's wife, Elizabeth Ann Norris, was the sister of William Procter's wife, Olivia Norris. Their father-in-law, Alexander Norris, thought they should work together. In 1837, he suggested they start a business. That's how the company Procter & Gamble began.

Later Life and Family

James Gamble and his wife, Elizabeth Ann, had ten children. One of their sons was James Norris Gamble. He was born on August 9, 1836. James Norris Gamble later became a Vice President at Procter & Gamble. He was also a chemist and created the recipe for Ivory soap. He passed away on July 2, 1932, in Cincinnati.

Another son, David Gamble, had a famous house built in Pasadena, California. It is known as the Gamble House.

James Gamble was a strong supporter of the Methodist church in Cincinnati. He was an important member of Westwood Methodist Church. He also gave money to help build other Methodist churches in the Cincinnati area.

Death

James Gamble died at his home in Cincinnati on April 29, 1891. He was 88 years old. He is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. William Procter, his business partner, is also buried in the same cemetery.
