James Haggerty (New York politician) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James Haggerty (born December 21, 1834 – died December 21, 1887) was an Irish-American lawyer and politician from New York. He was known for his work in law and his time serving in the New York State Assembly.

Early Life and Career

James Haggerty was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on December 21, 1834. His parents were from Ireland. When he was young, he moved to America. There, he studied law and became a lawyer.

Military Service

In February 1863, Haggerty joined the 111th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was a first lieutenant and an adjutant, which is like an assistant officer. He left the military in June of that year because of a disability.

Government Roles

In 1869, President Grant wanted Haggerty to be the U.S. Consul in Glasgow. A consul is like a diplomat who helps citizens and promotes trade in another country. However, when Haggerty arrived, the British government did not allow him to take the job. This was because he had connections to Irish nationalist groups, which were working for Irish independence.

Soon after, he was given another job: Deputy Naval Officer of the Port of New York. He worked there until 1872, when he decided to resign.

Political Journey

James Haggerty started his political life as a member of the Republican Party. After leaving his government job, he joined the Liberal Republican Party. When that party did not succeed, he became a member of the Democratic Party.

Time in the Assembly

In 1881, Haggerty was elected to the New York State Assembly as a Democrat. He represented the 20th District of New York County. He served in the Assembly for five years in a row:

  • 1882
  • 1883
  • 1884
  • 1885
  • 1886

Personal Life and Passing

James Haggerty was married, but he did not have any children. He was also a member of two important groups: the Grand Army of the Republic, which was a group for Union Civil War veterans, and the Irish National League.

Haggerty passed away at his home on December 21, 1887, which was also his 53rd birthday. He died from pneumonia, a serious lung infection. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.
