James Harbeson: A Pioneer's Story
Journey to Kentucky
During the last part of the American Revolution, James Harbeson and other settlers made a long journey. They crossed the blue mountains of Virginia. Their goal was to reach the beautiful Bluegrass region of Kentucky. This area was a new frontier, full of challenges and opportunities.
Building a New Home
The group found a good spot near the Chaplin River. Here, they decided to build a fort. The fort was important for safety. It was close to a natural spring and a cave. The cave was used as a safe place during attacks. This new settlement became known as Harbeson's Station.
The Mystery of His Disappearance
Local stories tell us about James Harbeson's disappearance. One day, he was trying to reach the cave. This cave was used for defense against hostile Native American groups. Sadly, Harbeson did not make it to the cave. He disappeared. His body was never fully found. However, his head was discovered about a mile from the fort. It is believed he died in an attack.
