The James Hazelton House is a really old and special house located in Haddam, Connecticut. It's also known as the Hazelton-Hayden House. This historic home was first built around the year 1720. That makes it one of the oldest buildings in Haddam!

For many years, the same important local family owned this house. Because of its history, the James Hazelton House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is also an important part of the Haddam Center Historic District.

What Does the James Hazelton House Look Like?

The James Hazelton House is found north of the main town area of Haddam. It sits on the west side of Hayden Hill Road. This house is two-and-a-half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof. There is a large chimney right in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards.

The front of the house has five sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. Windows are on either side of the door. Inside the house, you can see different styles from various time periods. Many parts of the inside show how homes looked in the early and late 1700s.

How Old is the James Hazelton House?

The oldest part of the house is its southern end. It was built by James Hazelton (1694–1773) around 1720. He was one of the first people to settle in the Haddam area.

Later, around 1780, the house was made wider. A section was also added to the back. James Hazelton's son did not have any children. So, he left the house to a relative or close friend named John Hayden. John Hayden's son, Arnold Hazelton Hayden, also owned it. The house stayed in the Hayden family for a very long time, even into the late 1900s.

In the 1800s, a smaller, one-and-a-half-story addition was built at the back. The James Hazelton House is a great example of a "First Period" house. This means it was built during the earliest time of American colonial architecture. It shows how houses changed and grew over many years.
