James Ingram (academic) facts for kids
James Ingram (born 1774, died 1850) was an important scholar from England. He worked at the famous University of Oxford. He was a professor who studied old English, called Anglo-Saxon. Later, he became the leader, or President, of Trinity College, Oxford. He held this important position until he passed away.
Growing Up and Learning
James Ingram was born on December 21, 1774. His hometown was a small village in Wiltshire called Codford St Mary.
He went to two schools before college. These were Lord Weymouth's Grammar School and Winchester College. After that, he went to Trinity College, Oxford, for his university studies.
He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1796. Later, he received his Master of Arts degree in 1800. In 1808, he completed his studies with a Bachelor of Divinity degree.
His Career at Oxford
James Ingram started his career as a teacher. He taught at Winchester College from 1799 to 1803. After that, he returned to Trinity College, Oxford. There, he became a Fellow and a tutor. This meant he was a senior member of the college and taught students.
He held several important jobs at the university:
- He was the Rawlinsonian Professor of Anglo-Saxon from 1803 to 1808. In this role, he taught and researched the Anglo-Saxon language and history.
- He served as the Keeper of the Archives from 1815 to 1818. This job involved looking after important historical documents and records of the university.
- He was also a rector (a church leader) in Rotherfield Greys from 1816 to 1824.
In 1824, James Ingram became the President of Trinity College. This was a very high position. As President, he was also the rector of Garsington, a village near Oxford.
His Academic Work
James Ingram loved studying Anglo-Saxon history and old buildings. These interests took up most of his time. Because of this, he didn't spend as much time on the daily running of the college.
He wrote and published several important books:
- In 1823, he published a special edition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. This book is a very old history of England written by Anglo-Saxons.
- He also edited a work by Quintilian in 1809. Quintilian was a famous Roman teacher of public speaking.
- His biggest work was Memorials of Oxford. This book had three volumes and was published between 1832 and 1837. It included 100 pictures drawn by John Le Keux.
James Ingram passed away at Trinity College on September 4, 1850. He left his collection of books, pictures, and old coins to Trinity College and Oxford University.
