James Johnson was born on July 20, 1971. He is an American coach who has worked with college basketball and football teams. He used to be the main coach for the Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team. Currently, he works with the Virginia Tech Hokies football team. His job is to be the Director of High School Relations.
He became the head coach for Virginia Tech's basketball team in 2012. Before that, he was an assistant coach there. He coached the team for two seasons. His overall record as head coach was 22 wins and 41 losses. Virginia Tech decided to make a change on March 17, 2014.

James Johnson's Coaching Journey
James Johnson has had a long career in college sports. He has worked with many different teams.
Early Coaching Roles
Johnson started his coaching career as an assistant. He worked at several universities.
- From 1995 to 1996, he was an assistant at Longwood.
- He then spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy.
- From 1997 to 2000, he was an assistant at Old Dominion.
- He also coached at Elon (2000–2002) and College of Charleston (2002–2003).
- From 2003 to 2005, he was an assistant at Penn State.
Time at George Mason and Virginia Tech
Johnson joined George Mason as an assistant coach in 2005. He was part of the team that made it to the NCAA Final Four in 2006. This was a very exciting time for the team.
After George Mason, he moved to Virginia Tech in 2007. He worked as an assistant coach there for five years. In 2012, he was promoted to head coach of the Virginia Tech men's basketball team.
After Virginia Tech Head Coach Role
After his time as head coach at Virginia Tech, Johnson continued his career.
- In June 2015, he joined the University of Miami basketball program. He was the Director of Basketball Operations there until 2017.
- On March 27, 2017, he became an assistant coach for the NC State Wolfpack men's basketball team. He had played college basketball with NC State's head coach, Kevin Keatts, at Ferrum College. Johnson stayed with NC State until May 9, 2022.
Return to Virginia Tech
On May 9, 2023, James Johnson returned to Virginia Tech. This time, he joined the football staff. He is now the Director of High School Relations for the Virginia Tech Hokies football team. In this role, he helps connect the college football program with high school players.
Playing Career
Before he became a coach, James Johnson was a college basketball player. He played for Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. He was a starter for three years. He is also a member of the Ferrum College Hall of Fame. This means he was a very important player for their team.
