He was also part of the Belmullet Board of Guardians, representing Sinn Féin. This was a political party working for Ireland's independence.
Role in the Irish Volunteers
Kilroy was a leader in the Irish Volunteers. This was a group that worked for Ireland to become an independent country. He was a Captain in the Ballyglass Company. Later, he became an Adjutant for the 7th Battalion in Belmullet. During this time, he was captured in August 1920. He was held in different places, including Galway, Portland, and Dartmoor, until January 1922.
After the Treaty
After Ireland gained some independence, there was a disagreement. This led to the Irish Civil War. James Kilroy took the side that did not agree with the treaty. He was part of a group called the 5th Brigade. This group operated in areas like Erris, Achill, and North West Mayo. He was captured again near Westport in November 1922. He was held in Harepark camp until 1924.
Political Career
After his release, James Kilroy continued his work in politics. He was very active in forming the Fianna Fáil party in Belmullet. This party would become one of Ireland's main political groups.
Local and National Elections
In 1927, he was elected to the Mayo County Council. This meant he helped make decisions for his local area. Later, he moved into national politics. He was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1943. Dáil Éireann is like Ireland's main parliament or house of representatives. Here, he was known as a Teachta Dála (TD). He was re-elected as a TD in 1944 and 1948.
Serving in the Seanad
In the 1951 general election, he lost his seat in Dáil Éireann. However, he was then elected to Seanad Éireann in the same year. Seanad Éireann is the upper house of the Irish parliament.
