James Lacy (1696-1774) was an important British stage actor and theatre manager. He lived during the 18th century, a time when theatre was very popular. Lacy helped shape the world of plays and performances in London. He worked with famous writers and actors of his time.

Early Career in Theatre

James Lacy began his acting career in 1724. He joined a theatre company led by John Rich. This company performed at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre in London.

Lacy's wife was also an actress. They often performed together on stage. One of their most famous roles was in the first performance of The Beggar's Opera. This popular play was written by John Gay. James Lacy played Robin of Bagshot, and his wife played Dolly Trull.

Working with Henry Fielding

In the 1730s, James Lacy worked with Henry Fielding. Fielding was a well-known writer and playwright. Lacy appeared in Fielding's play, The Author's Farce, playing the character Witmore. They also worked together at the famous Bartholomew Fair. This fair was a big event with many shows and performances.

The Licensing Act of 1737

In 1737, a new law was passed called the Licensing Act. This law changed how plays could be performed. It meant that theatres needed special permission to put on shows. James Lacy faced challenges because of this new law. He continued to produce plays, sometimes without the required licenses.

Managing Drury Lane Theatre

By 1744, James Lacy became the manager of the Drury Lane Theatre. This was one of the most important theatres in London. Managing such a big theatre was a huge responsibility.

Partnership with David Garrick

At Drury Lane, Lacy worked with the famous actor David Garrick. At first, they had some disagreements. These disagreements caused Garrick to leave the theatre for a few years. However, they later became friends again.

In 1747, Lacy and Garrick decided to work together. They became co-managers of the Drury Lane Theatre. Their partnership helped make Drury Lane a very successful theatre. They worked together for many years.

Later Life

In his later years, James Lacy owned a large house. It was called Lacy House. This mansion was located near the River Thames in Isleworth. He lived there until his death in 1774.
