The James M. Jameson Farm is a historic farm located at 10220 North Parma Road, close to Springport, Michigan. This special place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It's recognized for its interesting history and unique building style.

The Farm's Story

Early Days and Building a Home

James M. Jameson moved to Springport, Michigan, from New York State in 1835. He soon found the land where the farm stands today. He built a log house there and started farming. During the cold winter months, he also worked as a school teacher.

In 1841, James married Loretta Townley. After their marriage, he focused even more on farming. Over the next ten years, James Jameson worked hard. His farm became one of the two biggest in the entire area.

A Leader in the Community

Jameson was also a very important person in his local community. People trusted him, and he was chosen many times to be the township supervisor. This job meant he helped manage the local government for the area.

In 1850, James built a brand new brick house on his farm. This was a big deal because it was the very first brick house ever built in the township! The house was quite fancy for Michigan at the time. It is known as one of the best examples of a Greek Revival style house in south-central Michigan. James Jameson left the Springport area in 1876. He passed away in Jackson, Michigan, in 1886.

What the Farm Looks Like

The Jameson Farm today still has the original 1850 farmhouse. It also includes an old barnyard area. Here, you can find a barn that was also used as a corncrib, a sheep pen, and a shed for farm tools. There are also parts of an old fruit orchard.

The Historic Farmhouse

The farmhouse built in 1850 is quite large and detailed. It's made of brick and built in an L-shape. The house sits on a strong foundation made of fieldstone.

The main part of the house has two stories and a special type of roof called a hip roof. There's also a smaller, one-and-a-half-story wing on the side. A large section extends out to the back of the house. The house has wide decorative edges under the roof and a flat band below them. There is a porch with strong, simple columns in front of the side wing. Another small porch used to be at the main entrance door.

The windows have two sashes that slide up and down, each with six glass panes. The windows on the front of the house have iron pieces above and below them. On the other sides of the house, the windows have sandstone pieces.
