James Murray, 1st Baron Glenlyon (born May 29, 1782 – died October 12, 1837), was an important figure in British history. He was an officer in the British Army, a member of the British Parliament, and a peer (a noble with a special title). Before 1821, he was known as Lord James Murray.

Early Life and Military Career

James Murray was born in 1782 in Dunkeld, a town in Perthshire, Scotland. His father was John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl, a very important noble.

James began his career in the British Army in 1798. He worked his way up through the ranks, becoming a Major-General by 1819. Later, in 1837, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General.

Public Service and Family Life

Beyond his military duties, James Murray also served in government. From 1807 to 1812, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Perthshire. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

He also held positions close to the royal family. From 1812 to 1832, he was a Gentleman of the Bedchamber, which was a role assisting the King. From 1813 to 1819, he was an aide-de-camp to the Prince Regent, who was ruling the country at the time.

In 1821, James Murray was given the title of Baron Glenlyon. This made him a peer, and he became known as Lord Glenlyon. He also helped manage family matters for his older brother.

Lord Glenlyon passed away in London on October 12, 1837, when he was 55 years old. He was buried in Dunkeld, Scotland.

Family and Descendants

On May 19, 1810, James Murray married Lady Emily Frances Percy in London. Lady Emily was the daughter of Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland, another important noble.

James and Emily had four children together:

  • Hon. Frances Julia Murray (died 1868)
  • Hon. Charlotte Augusta Leopoldina Murray (died 1889)
  • George Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl (born 1814, died 1864)
  • Colonel the Hon. James Charles Plantagenet Murray (born 1819, died 1874)

Awards and Recognition

James Murray received several honors during his lifetime:

  • He became a Fellow of the Royal Society on April 9, 1818. This is a very old and respected group for scientists.
  • He was made a Knight Commander of the Hanoverian Order in 1820. This was a special award from the King.
