James Paty the Younger (born 1718, died 1779) was an English mason, builder, and architect. He was part of the famous Paty family. This family was very important in building many structures in Bristol during the 1700s. James often worked with his brother, Thomas Paty, on building projects. People also believe he was the main architect who oversaw the rebuilding of Stoke Park House. This grand house is located in Stoke Gifford.

The Paty Family: Builders of Bristol

James Paty the Younger was the younger brother of Thomas Paty. He was likely the nephew or another relative of James Paty the Elder. The Paty family was well-known for their building skills.

A special drawing book links these family members. It might have been passed down through the family. Drawings in this book are thought to have been made by James the Younger, Thomas, and James the Elder.

Each of these men worked from different workshops. James the Younger had his workshop on Horse Street in Bristol. In 1755, he became a "burgess" of Bristol. This meant he was a free citizen with special rights. He gained this status because he married his wife, Mary. James Paty the Younger passed away in 1779. He left behind a son named John.

James Paty's Building Projects

James Paty the Younger worked on many important buildings. He often teamed up with his brother Thomas Paty. They worked together on new buildings around Park Street and Clifton in Bristol.

Stoke Park House

James was the main mason at Stoke Park House. He was probably also the architect who managed the building site. He followed the designs of Thomas Wright. However, James might have added some of his own design ideas too. His brother, Thomas Paty, also helped as a mason on this project.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre Royal

Some people believe James Paty designed the Theatre Royal. But this is not certain. Most experts think his brother, Thomas Paty, was the main architect for the theatre.
