James William Rothery (born September 5, 1877 – died June 2, 1919) was an English first-class cricketer. He played 150 matches for the Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1903 and 1910.

James William Rothery: A Cricket Star

James William Rothery was born in Staincliffe, a place in Batley, Yorkshire. He was a right-handed batsman, which means he hit the ball with his right hand.

His Cricket Career

Rothery scored a total of 4,619 runs during his career. His highest score in a single game was 161 runs, which he made against Kent. He scored three centuries (100 runs or more in one game) in total. Besides Kent, he also hit centuries against Hampshire and Derbyshire.

He also made twenty-one half-centuries (50 runs or more) and caught 45 balls as a fielder. Sometimes, he even bowled, taking two wickets for 44 runs. Rothery also played one first-class game for a team called J Bamford's XI. He played for the Yorkshire Second XI, the Yorkshire Cricket Council, and even for Durham in other matches.

A Hero's End

Sadly, James Rothery died in June 1919 in Beckett Park, Leeds, Yorkshire. He was 41 years old. He passed away from injuries he received while fighting in World War I.
