James Sandilands, 7th Lord Torphichen facts for kids
James Sandilands, 7th Lord Torphichen (died 1753) was a Scottish nobleman and army officer. He strongly supported the government during the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion.
His Life and Military Career
James Sandilands was the oldest surviving son of Walter Sandilands, 6th Lord Torphichen. His mother was Catherine Alexander.
He supported the Acts of Union 1707, which joined Scotland and England to form Great Britain. Later, he served in the army under the famous general, the Duke of Marlborough. James Sandilands was a lieutenant-colonel in the 7th Dragoons, a cavalry regiment.
When the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion began, his regiment was in Scotland. On October 17, he tried to remove the Highlanders from Seton House, but he was not successful. He and his regiment also fought in the Battle of Sheriffmuir.
In 1722, James Sandilands was given a special role as a "lord of police." This meant he was a government official who helped keep order. He passed away on August 10, 1753.
His Family
James Sandilands and his wife, Lady Jean Hume, had many children. They had three daughters who never married, and eight sons.
Here are some of his sons:
- His eldest son, James, was a lieutenant in the 44th Foot army regiment. He was badly hurt at the Battle of Prestonpans and died in 1749.
- His second son, Walter, became the eighth Lord Torphichen. He was a sheriff in Mid-Lothian during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. He was very active in Edinburgh at that time.
- Two other sons, Andrew and Robert, were also known as soldiers.
