James Scott, Earl of Dalkeith facts for kids
James Scott, Earl of Dalkeith, was a Scottish nobleman and a member of the Order of the Thistle. He was born on May 23, 1674. His parents were James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth and Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch. He was also the grandson of Charles II of England, who was King of Scotland, England, and Ireland.
On January 2, 1694, James Scott married Lady Henrietta Hyde. She was born around 1677 in Hindon, Wiltshire. Lady Henrietta was the daughter of Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester and Henrietta Hyde, Countess of Rochester. She was known for being very witty and charming, even when she was older. People said that her many troubles never made her lose her good nature. Lady Henrietta passed away on May 30, 1730.
Family Life
James and Henrietta had six children together. Their children were:
- Francis Scott, 2nd Duke of Buccleuch (born January 11, 1695 – died May 22, 1751). He later became the 2nd Duke of Buccleuch.
- Anne (born April 1, 1696 – died October 11, 1714)
- Charlotte (born April 30, 1697 – died August 22, 1747)
- Charles (born March 1700 – died April 4, 1700). He passed away when he was very young.
- James (born January 14, 1702 – died February 26, 1719)
- Henry (born November 26, 1704 – died young). He also passed away at a young age.
Later Life and Burial
Lord Dalkeith passed away suddenly on March 14, 1705. He was buried on March 19, 1705. His burial place is in the King Henry VII Chapel at Westminster Abbey in London.
