James was the son of James Stewart, Earl of Arran, and Elizabeth Stewart. He was born around 1583 and was baptized on March 14, 1583. Even James VI of Scotland, the King, and the Duke of Lennox were his godparents!

Becoming Lord Ochiltree

In 1615, James Stewart's cousin, Andrew Stuart, sold him the important title of Lord Ochiltree. This meant James became the 4th person to hold this noble title.

Adventures and Challenges

James Stewart was quite adventurous. In 1629, he tried to start a new Scottish colony in Canada, on an island called Cape Breton. He named his settlement Rosemar. However, his plans didn't work out. French soldiers captured him and took him to France.

Later, in 1631, James became involved in a big disagreement. He made some serious accusations against powerful people like James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton, Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington, Robert Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe, and Francis Scott, 2nd Earl of Buccleuch. Because of these accusations, he was sent to prison in Blackness Castle.

Family Life

James Stewart married twice. His first wife was Katherine Kennedy. Later, he married Mary Livingston. James and Mary had a son named William, who later became the 5th Lord Ochiltree, continuing the family's noble line.
