Lord Ochiltree facts for kids
The title of Lord Ochiltree (or Lord Stuart of Ochiltree) was an important noble rank in Scotland. A "lordship" was like owning a large area of land and having special rights and duties. The "Peerage of Scotland" is a list of all the noble titles in Scotland.
This title began in 1542. Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord Avondale traded his land and title of Avondale. He exchanged it with Sir James Hamilton. In return, Andrew Stewart received the lordship of Ochiltree. The Scottish Parliament then officially named him Lord Stuart of Ochiltrie.
Years later, Andrew Stewart's great-grandson was the third Lord Stuart of Ochiltrie. In 1615, he decided to give up his title and the land of Ochiltree. He passed them to his cousin, James Stewart. The King agreed to this change. Later, in 1619, this third Lord received a new title. He became Baron Castle Stewart in the Peerage of Ireland.
James Stewart then became the next Lord Ochiltree. He is sometimes called the first or fourth Lord. His son, William, took over the title after him. William was the second or sixth Lord. Sadly, William died young in 1675. After his death, the title either became "dormant" (meaning it could be claimed again later) or "extinct" (meaning it ended forever).
Some members of the Ochiltree family also had connections in Sweden. A branch of the family, known as Stuart, was part of the Swedish House of Lords (Riddarhuset). For example, Hans (Johannes) Stuart, who died in 1618, received official documents in Edinburgh. These documents confirmed his family's noble background and their right to use a coat of arms. King James VI of Scotland gave him these special papers in 1585.
