James Thompson (October 16, 1964 – August 2, 2014) was an American writer who lived in Helsinki, Finland. He was famous for writing exciting crime novels.
Thompson was very smart and loved learning. He earned a master's degree from the University of Helsinki. He studied many languages, including Finnish, and could speak six different ones! He wrote four popular crime novels that featured a Finnish police officer named Kari Vaara.
Sadly, James Thompson passed away unexpectedly in his home town of Lahti, Finland, in August 2014.

The Inspector Vaara Series
James Thompson's most famous books are about a police officer named Kari Vaara. This character first appeared in Thompson's novel, Snow Angels. In this book, Vaara is a police chief in a town called Kittilä in Lapland, a northern part of Finland.
In the second book, Lucifer's Tears, Inspector Vaara moves to Helsinki. In the first two books, he is shown as a good and dedicated police officer. However, in later books like Helsinki White, Vaara faces many challenges. He sometimes makes difficult choices. In Helsinki Blood, Vaara tries to make things right and find a way to improve his situation.
