James Wales (1747–1795) was a talented Scottish artist. He was known for painting portraits of important people. He also created beautiful drawings of ancient caves.

Who Was James Wales?

James Wales was born in Peterhead, Scotland. He started his career by selling portraits in Aberdeen. Later, he moved to London, a big city for artists. His artwork was shown in famous places like the Royal Academy.

His Time in India

In 1791, James Wales traveled to India. This was a very exciting journey for an artist. He painted many important leaders of the Maratha Empire. These included Sawai Madhavrao and Nana Fadnavis.

He also drew and painted famous places. He created pictures of the Elephanta Caves and the Ellora Caves. His drawings of the Ellora Caves were later published in a book. The book was called Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora. It came out in 1803.

Family and Legacy

James Wales had a daughter named Susanna. She was also a portrait painter. Susanna married Sir Charles Malet, 1st Baronet. James Wales had met Sir Charles while he was working in India.
