James Whatman (born 1813, died 12 March 1887) was an English politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the UK Parliament, known as the House of Commons. He was an MP for two different periods between 1852 and 1874.

He was very smart and respected. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1840. This is a special group for top scientists. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This group studies history and old things.

James Whatman was a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he was elected to represent people in the government. He was part of the Liberal Party.

He was first elected in 1852. He became one of two MPs for Maidstone. In 1857, he ran for a different area. He won one of the two seats for the Western division of Kent. However, he lost his seat in the 1859 election.

After six years, Whatman returned to Parliament. He was elected again in 1865 for Maidstone. He kept this seat until 1874. He chose not to run for election that year.
