James of Aragon (monk) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

James of Aragon (born September 29, 1296 – died July 1334) was the oldest son of King James II and Blanche of Naples. As the king's firstborn, he was an infante (a prince) and the heir apparent (the person next in line) to the Crown of Aragon. This was a large kingdom that included parts of what is now Spain, as well as islands like Sardinia and Corsica. James is famous for his surprising choice: he decided to give up his right to the throne and become a monk instead.

Early Life

When Queen Blanche was expecting James in 1296, King James II brought in a skilled doctor from Paris. James was born on September 29. His father, the King, was very careful about James's health, even when James grew up. The King chose his son's doctors and expected them to report to him often. Even James's personal assistant used to be a royal doctor.

From a young age, James was given the job of procurator general. This meant he handled legal matters for his father, the King. In 1313, James became very sick with a fever but thankfully recovered.

A Different Path

James eventually convinced his father, the King, to let him follow his own path. His decision to give up his right to the throne was officially approved. This happened at a meeting of noblemen at the Monastery of Saint Francis in Tarragona on December 22. Since his marriage had not been completed, it was easily canceled.

James first joined a group called the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, who were like knight-monks. Later, he left them to join a local group called the Order of Montesa. After James made this choice, his relationship with his father became more difficult. The King was often worried about James's changing moods.

When their father died in 1327, the crown passed to James's younger brother, Alfons IV. Alfons later married Eleanor, who had been James's wife, in 1329. James of Aragon died in July 1334.
