James of Castile (born July 11, 1268 – died August 9, 1284) was a prince, also known as an infante, of Castile. He was also the Lord of Cameros. James was the youngest son of Alfonso X of Castile, who was the King of Castile, and Violant of Aragon.

Early Life and Titles

James of Castile was born in 1268. As a young prince, he was called Jaime. On February 17, 1281, his father, King Alfonso X, made him a knight in the city of Burgos. This was a special ceremony where he officially became a knight. His older brothers, John and Peter, also had important events happening at the same time.

In 1277, James received the important area known as the Lordship of Cameros from his father. This happened after the previous Lord of Cameros, Simón Ruiz, was removed from his position. Simón Ruiz had been involved in a plot with James's uncle, Frederick of Castile, who tried to take the throne from King Alfonso X.

Family Conflicts and Loyalty

At one point, a disagreement broke out between King Alfonso X and his son, Sancho. This was like a family dispute over who should rule. James first sided with his brother Sancho. However, in March 1283, James changed his mind. He decided to leave Sancho's side and returned to support his father, the king.

Later in 1283, James worked with Juan Alfonso de Haro. Together, they helped the cities of Soria and Ágreda go against his brother Sancho. King Alfonso X was pleased with James's loyalty and help.

Inheritance and Legacy

As a reward for his service, King Alfonso X made a special plan for James in his will. A will is a document that says what someone wants to happen to their property after they die. The king decided that James would receive the kingdom of Murcia. However, there was a condition: Murcia would still be connected to the Kingdom of Castile and León. This larger kingdom was planned to go to James's nephew, Alfonso de la Cerda. Alfonso de la Cerda was the son of James's older brother, Ferdinand de la Cerda, who had passed away.

James of Castile died on August 9, 1284, when he was only 16 years old.
