The Jamia Mosque or Shelley Street Mosque (Chinese: 些利街清真寺) is a special mosque found in Hong Kong, People's Republic of China. It holds the record for being the very first and oldest mosque ever built in Hong Kong.
History of the Mosque
The story of the Jamia Mosque began in 1850 when the government of British Hong Kong rented some land. Later, in 1890, the first building for the mosque was constructed. It was originally known as the Mohammedan Mosque. Many years later, in 1915, the mosque building was made bigger. After World War II, it was given a new name, becoming the Jamia Mosque that we know today.
About its Architecture
The Jamia Mosque building is very important. It is officially listed as a Grade I Building. This means it is considered a historical treasure that needs to be carefully protected and kept safe for future generations to see and learn from.
