Early Life and Education
Jamshid Amouzegar was born on June 25, 1923, in Tehran, which was then known as Persia. His father, Habibollah Amouzegar, was a well-known lawyer and politician. Jamshid also had a brother named Jahangir Amouzegar.
He studied at Tehran University, where he earned degrees in law and engineering. Later, he went to Cornell University in the United States. There, he completed his advanced studies and received a Ph.D.
Political Career and Achievements
Jamshid Amouzegar began his career in government in 1955. He worked as a deputy minister in Iran's health ministry. Over the years, he held several important positions. These included Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Labor, and Minister of Health.
Minister of Finance
In 1964, Amouzegar became the Minister of Finance. He held this role for nine years. During this time, he was very involved with the OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries). From 1965 to 1974, he led many of OPEC's regular meetings.
In 1971, he worked with the Saudi Oil Minister, Ahmed Zaki Yamani. They helped to increase oil prices significantly. This provided Iran with more money to improve its roads, farms, and defense. For his work, Amouzegar received a high honor called the Taj-e Iran, first-class. This award was usually given only to prime ministers.
Minister of Interior and Hostage Incident
Amouzegar was appointed Minister of Interior in 1974. In December 1975, he was at an OPEC meeting when he and other officials were taken hostage. They were held for a few days but were later released unharmed. He was flown to Algeria and then set free.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1977, Jamshid Amouzegar became the chairman of the Rastakhiz Party. This party was also known as the "Resurrection Party." On August 7, 1977, he was appointed Prime Minister of Iran. He took over from Amir Abbas Hoveyda.
As Prime Minister, he tried to slow down Iran's fast-growing economy. These actions were seen as necessary, but they led to some job losses and reduced business profits. This made his government less popular. He resigned from his position on August 27, 1978. Jafar Sharif-Emami then became the new Prime Minister.
Later Life and Passing
After leaving Iran in 1978, Jamshid Amouzegar did not return. He lived in the United States, first in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and later in Rockville, Maryland. He also worked as an advisor for the governments of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Jamshid Amouzegar passed away in Rockville, Maryland, on September 27, 2016. He was 93 years old.
