Early Life and Education
Jan Böhmermann grew up in Bremen, Germany. His mother moved to Germany in the early 1970s. Jan keeps his private life mostly to himself, but it is known that he has at least one child.
He started gaining experience in journalism in 1997 at a local newspaper in Bremen. In 1999, he began working at Radio Bremen as a host and reporter. He tried to get into drama schools several times. He also started studying history, sociology, and film at the University of Cologne, but he later left his studies to focus on his career.
Career Highlights
In 2004, Jan moved to 1Live, a radio station, as a presenter and comedian. There, he created a funny radio segment called "Lukas' Tagebuch" (Lukas' Diary). It was a playful imitation of a famous soccer player, Lukas Podolski. This segment became very popular. For the 2008 European Soccer Championship, Böhmermann launched a podcast called "Pod-Olski – Der EM-Podcast von Lukas", which quickly became a top podcast on iTunes.
In 2007, Jan had his own comedy show on WDR television called Echt Böhmermann. In 2009, he created a funny project for the RTL show TV-Helden. This project, called the First Turkish Carnival Club of Germany, was a satirical idea that actually inspired a real club to form! The TV-Helden show even won an award for "Best Comedy Program" in 2009. That same year, Jan published his first book, Alles, alles über Deutschland – Halbwissen kompakt.
From 2009, Böhmermann was part of the team for Harald Schmidt's TV show on ARD. He also hosted a monthly radio show called "Die ganz große Jan Böhmermann Radioschau" until 2011.
In 2010, Jan joined the radio show Lateline and wrote a column for a youth newspaper. He also co-hosted Beeck & Böhmermann on 1Live until 2011.
Stage and Radio Shows
Starting in 2011, Jan Böhmermann toured Germany with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf in a funny improv show called Zwei alte Hasen erzählen von früher. They also hosted a radio show together. Later, Jan started hosting the show with singer-songwriter Olli Schulz. This show, first called "Joko und Klaas mit Olli und Jan" and then Sanft & Sorgfältig, became very popular and was broadcast on many radio stations.
In 2012, Jan co-hosted a talk show called Roche & Böhmermann with Charlotte Roche on ZDFkultur. He also continued touring with Lateline, broadcasting live from different cities.
Jan Böhmermann and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf also created a radio play called Förderschulklassenfahrt, which was so popular they made a second part.
TV and Podcast Success
In October 2013, Jan Böhmermann created a unique documentary-style satire for the program 16 × Germany. He focused on his hometown of Bremen, using humor and exaggeration to tell a story. This type of show, which looks like a documentary but is actually fictional, is called a mockumentary.
From October 2013 to December 2019, Jan hosted the political-satirical late-night show Neo Magazin on ZDFneo. This show became very well-known for its sharp humor and social commentary.

In 2014, Jan went on tour with his stage show "Schlimmer als Jan Böhmermann", sharing jokes and funny stories from his past work. He also appeared in a new comedy show on RTL called Was wäre wenn?.
In 2015, Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz announced a new version of their talk show, Schulz & Böhmermann, which aired on ZDFneo.
Since May 2016, Schulz and Böhmermann have hosted the popular podcast Fest & Flauschig for Spotify. This podcast became one of the most-streamed podcasts worldwide in 2018. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they even released shorter daily episodes to help people feel connected.
In 2017, Jan Böhmermann made history by being the first German comedian to be a guest on a major U.S. talk show, Late Night.
Activism and Public Awareness
Jan Böhmermann often uses his shows to speak up for important causes. He has strongly supported the welfare of refugees and has criticized policies that make it difficult for private groups to rescue people at sea. He launched fundraising campaigns to help sea rescue organizations. For example, he helped raise hundreds of thousands of euros for legal aid and for the Sea-Watch association, which rescues people in need.
In 2019, Jan Böhmermann humorously announced on his show that he wanted to become the leader of a political party, the SPD. A month later, he actually joined the party.
