Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen, also known as Jan Mayo or Barbalonga, was a famous Dutch painter who lived from about 1504 to 1559. He was an important artist during the Northern Renaissance, a time when art and new ideas were spreading across Europe.

Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen's Life Story

Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen was born in a place called Beverwijk in the Netherlands, around the year 1504. He became a very respected artist, especially because he worked for Emperor Charles V, who was a powerful ruler of a large empire. Vermeyen was also friends with another well-known artist, Jan van Scorel. His portrait was even made into an engraving by Jan Wierix, showing how famous he was.

Working for Important Rulers

Vermeyen was not just a painter; he also designed beautiful tapestries. These are large, woven pictures used to decorate walls. Around 1525, he became the official painter for Margaret of Austria. She was the ruler of the Netherlands at the time and the aunt of Emperor Charles V. Vermeyen worked for her in a city called Mechelen.

Between 1530 and 1535, Vermeyen traveled and worked in cities like Augsburg and Innsbruck.

Journey with Emperor Charles V

In 1535, Vermeyen went on an exciting journey with Emperor Charles V. They traveled to Tunis, a city in North Africa, during a military campaign. This trip was very important for Vermeyen's art. He painted the Hafsid King of Tunis, Moulay Hassan, who Charles V helped to put back on his throne.

This journey gave Vermeyen many ideas for his later artworks. For example, he designed a series of twelve tapestries between 1545 and 1548. These tapestries showed scenes from the campaign in Tunis and were made for Charles V's sister, Mary of Hungary, who was the ruler of Hungary. These tapestries were so important that Charles V took them with him wherever he went to show off his victory.

After his travels, Vermeyen worked in Spain in 1536. Later, he moved to Brussels, where he lived until he passed away in 1559.
