Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Jan Jönsson became a football coach. From 1993 to 1994, he worked as an assistant coach for Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan. He helped their manager, Stuart Baxter, with the team.
Later, he became the main manager for Landskrona. He helped this team get promoted to Allsvenskan, which is the top football league in Sweden.
In 2005, Jan Jönsson took over the Norwegian club Stabæk. In his very first season, he led them to promotion to a higher league. He then helped Stabæk win the league championship in 2008.
On November 19, 2014, it was announced that Jan Jönsson was moving back to his hometown of Halmstad. He signed a three-year contract to be the head coach of HBK. In his first season, the team was relegated from Allsvenskan, meaning they moved down to a lower league.
However, the next season, Halmstad finished third in Superettan, which is the league below Allsvenskan. They then played against Helsingborg in a special two-game play-off. Halmstad won these games with a total score of 3–2, which meant they were promoted back to Allsvenskan!
In June 2019, Jan Jönsson returned to Stabæk for his second time as head coach. One of the reasons for his return was that his daughter, Zara, signed to play for Stabæk's women's team. On October 25, 2019, Stabæk announced that Jan Jönsson's contract was extended until the end of the 2022 season. However, on July 4, 2021, his contract with Stabæk ended by agreement between both sides.
